Property Industry Ireland (PII) has said that it remains concerned that high levels of judicial review, particularly of Strategic Housing Development (SHD) applications, is likely to delay the commencement and completion of many units. It comes as the Central Statistics Office (CSO) publishes the latest figures on planning permissions across the country.


Commenting on the latest CSO data on planning permissions Director of PII, Dr. David Duffy said: “Today’s data show planning permissions growing by 1.5% in 2021. However, if planning permissions for one-off housing are excluded, total planning permissions fell by 4.3%. One of the main solutions to the current housing crisis is the delivery of homes at scale.


“This latest CSO data highlights a move towards apartments in future home delivery. In 2021 apartment planning permission grew by 6.5%. The growth in planning permissions for apartments shows a commitment to the delivery of homes within our cities. Planning permission for housing fell by 5.6%. 


“PII remain concerned that given the high level of judicial review, particularly of SHD applications, commencement and completion of many of these units that have been granted planning permission is likely to be significantly delayed.”
