There are indications that non-essential construction will be allowed to recommence in the Republic of Ireland before the current proposed date of the 5th of March, albeit on a phased basis initially. It is estimated the current lockdown could cost the construction industry a total of around €3 billion, or 10% of output – if it continues for another three weeks. The Irish government has mooted that if Covid-19 case numbers fall below 1,000 per day then construction sites would commence reopening, which is looking encouraging with current trends.
